I have just one mantis, it is a male. I would be much happier if it was a female. Females are better for a number of reasons:

1. Reach larger sizes.

2. Longer Lifespan.

Reasons males are better:

1. Better flyers.

Which sex do you all think is better?

i like them both the same. :p

Depends on the species for me - I like most species of males because they're slimmer, less aggressive (they are much more friendly in handling - especially chinese males vs. females), and of course, cuter. :p But I'm not saying I like all males - I'd personally favor the P. virescens female over the P. virescens male.

I just don't like those big, huge scary females that turn around to look at your hand when you brush their leg. I've also had incidents where chinese and C. humeralis females clamped on my finger, started biting, and drew blood. Not fun!

Why us females are better of course! Both in mantises and humans, we are the queens after all! :p

It's hard for me to answer this question. I've had so many wonderful mantises in both genders and I find positives and negatives to owning either gender. I deal with mainly Chinese Mantises, so I'll list what I've noticed with them starting with the girls, because ladies first of course.

Females Likes-

Life expectancy- they do seem to live a little longer than males on average.

Easy Feeders- All my females on a whole have been very voracious hunters who are more than willing to tackle almost anything I toss at them. Adult females will gladly take food on a daily bases so if you enjoy watching them eat they are wonderful little gluttons.

Confident- Most female mantises I have had are on the confident side. They aren't quick to shy and love to preen themselves in front of a curious crowd.

Calmer- I enjoy taking my mantises out of cage for some free time, and the females are far more relaxed about sitting around. Sure they climb about some but they will often find a perch and relax.

Female Dislikes-

They lay egg cases- I don't usually breed my mantises so I have no need for their egg cases. Since I use mesh cages the females are a bit trickier to keep because I have to rotate them into my metal mesh cage or my older cages because if they lay their eggs straight on the fabric of the of the fine mesh I'll never be able to completely clean the mesh off in that spot. The constant laying of egg cases can also be harder on their body, especially when they get older and you can see the extra weight become hard for them to carry.

Flight- Tied into laying egg cases, female Chinese Mantises are too heavy generally for much more than the occasionally hop flutter.

Overall- Female Chinese Mantises are little queens and they expect to be treated like them. They are not fond of being poked along and they will do as they please but they can be little sweethearts when they want to.

Male Likes-

Great fliers- I always have so much fun having them fly over to me.

More nimble- They are slender and light weight and often remain pretty limber even into old age. As adults they are very active I think in part for the natural instinct to search out mates.

Gentle- Most males I've had are very easy to handle. They are usually more than willing to be nudged where you want them to go and are less lightly to take up offensive stances if frightened.

Male Dislikes-

Picky eaters- Well picky in so much as they won't devour everything insight like their female counterparts. They don't eat every day and sometimes it can get annoying trying to guess if they have gone long enough without food when your trying to get them to eat. I also have noticed they are more likely to shy at prey items and can be a bit more skiddish about what they will attempt to tackle. Sometimes this nervous behavior can also make them shy and jumpy when being handled.

Overall- Males are dainty little, dorky, love bugs who aren't afraid to show off their gentle side.

I guess you could say I'm really smitten with all my little mantises male or female. Unlike Mantida I haven't had any problems handling my female Chinese mantises. Not sure I would say so much as they are more aggressive, but they demand more respect when being moved. They know they are slower and unable to fly as adults so they often will move to a display offensive stance if threatened. Males however are light and can fly so if threatened they will often try fleeing first. In the end, both are just doing what they would do in the wild to survive.

Krissim, I've never had problems with my chinese males being "picky" eaters - all mine tackled all the food I gave them. Most took dragonflies at subadult even.

I think I just had monster chinese mantids - if I twitched even a finger when handling my female, she'd bend her head down and glare at it, and always tried to strike.

Heh well for picky my thoughts were probably skewed a bit to my one dainty boy Alien. I swear he wouldn't have hurt a fly if it weren't for the fact he needed to eat insects to survive. Picky probably wasn't the right word though since on a whole Chinese are little stick legged gluttons. I guess at times the males probably just felt picky because I would toss something in and they would give me the, I'm still full from yesterday mom. Wow, I've never had male or female mantis Chinese or the other few species I've handled ever claw strike at me. Occasionally I would startle one and they would do the butt curl, wings up, claws to the side stance, but they always calmed right down once they realized it was me. The females do seem more prone to the death stare. I have to admit though I love when they do that. So much sass in such itty bitty bugs. :D

dont u just love how the female turns her head and looks at u,other words"make another move im going to bit your finger off"lol.i have never been bit buy any mantid..touch wood

Since I've only ever had a male I can't just say females are better for their size. Once I have had lots of different species I will be able to judge which gender is better. At the moment I am wanting a Giant Female Asian Mantis because I always thought Mantids were like 30cm long and found them really interesting for that reason (and other reasons)! (until about 11).

My male is really wimpy too. It will have it's meal tap it's foot and in a second it is on the other side of the roof. :p I'm getting a Blue Winged Mantis from Graham soon. I'm asking for a female. That way I may not have to buy FFs online...

Females are way better, they actually want to eat! not scared of much, look way better and are bigger and live longer

(100th post, hooray! :) ) My male is now subadult and is absolutely puny and weak. I like it a lot and of course I don't not like it, I'd just prefer a female.

If you complain so much about males being puny and weak, why not get a female already? Sorry if that sounded rude, I didn't mean for it to be... but it seems like you are just talking about how females are so much better and not getting one.

My bad, I suppose it does sound a bit silly. I've already ordered a blue winged mantis (female) and i am going to order a giant asian female real soon.
