I'm looking to catch a mantis around the lower great lakes region. Some advice I need:

-What kind of plants they hang around?

-When they will be big enough to see and catch them?

-How rare they are to see?

Any other tips would be greatly appreciated!! So help me out please, some of you have GOT to be from New York state, Michigan and the like..right? Thanks in advance.

In areas where mantids are common they are easy to find especially in the fall. Find a weedy meadow, overgrown lot, etc. Any place that contains alot of grasshoppers you will find a lot of mantids. Late summer/fall is the best time.

If you find a decent field you can find them every few feet, it's just finding the right area (in your area you'd find European and Chinese mantids, rarely S. carolina).
