So it isn't really a big deal as it was just a freshly born nymph, I had 15 double shields and lost about 2 to bad mismolts, another 12 successfully molted to L2 (and some are now L3 and even L4) but this single one I had left that hadn't molted once yet attempted to molt while standing sideways on the wall of the enclosure and not vertical, it obviously failed because it's raptorials and legs all got stuck inside but what perplexed me were a few things.

1. It had been fed the same food and same amount of food as the other nymphs (I kept them in 15 seperate enclosures) and recieved the same amount of water, it never acted sluggish or dehydrated and always looked well fed yet it took this mantis almost 7 weeks to even attempt the L1 molt, a good 3 weeks after every other, is this normal?

2. There was more than enough vertical hanging space, he was even right near the top of the enclosure, if he reached his raptorials out he would have hit the top. Has anyone else seen this type of behaviour? (Molting hanging sideways when there is vertical hang space available not 2 steps away?)

He was kept in a small container with paper towel on the roof and floor with 2 diagonally hanging sticks, most of the others simply molted off the paper towel on the roof, a couple did it off the sticks but this guy literally clung to the smooth plastic wall of the container and started molting :/

I have had many types of nymphs molt side ways and come out perfect but most of my mismolts usually happen hanging upside down in net cubes!

It happens. There are always things that happen regardless of how well you set up the enclosure.
