Hi,

I'm jetting off to Borneo (Indonesian part) for a couple of weeks next month and was trying to think what mantid species I should keep a look out for. I'll be working in the rainforest so will definitely be keeping my eyes peeled.

Then I'll be travelling in Thailand for 2 and a half weeks, are there any particular sp. I'm likely to see there?

Thanks

Alan

Hi.

There are about 200 species or so existing in both regions. I made the experience that one should not expect anything but go there, look around and ask afterwards what it could be. Determination is in most cases, particularly for larger species, possible to genus level and that is relatively sufficient for a first successful brood. I was on Borneo in March, we found just a few species, but all are in stock now. You will like everything you have found, because you have found it. And, you have all infos on habitat and location. If you just look after spectacular species, you do not have an eye for the species around you.

Good luck there! It's worth a trip.

Thanks for the tips guys, I shall have my camera handy and a notebook to record details....I shall go with an open mind!

Thanks

Agree with all said above ^^^ The rainforests are notorious for one thing: don't try to find stuff, let them find you! I found a shield mantis in Tahiti once - wasn't in the rainforests, it was on my hotel door!..

But yeah, have a great time :D
