Just wondering if anyone can tell me why my matis won't walk on the bottom of his terrarium. He seems to only want to crawl on the top of it, hanging upside down. Any ideas why? By the way, his cage is clean, so I wouldn't think that he's not wanting to walk in filth.

Mantids are evolved to catch flying prey. Because of this, they like to be as high as possible. They're also sit-and-wait predators, so they don't move around much at all.

My dead leaf mantis likes to be at the bottom of her cage, but if you think about it, that's the best place for a dead leaf to be.

There are some species that like to hang out in low areas as above was mentioned. Also when a mamtid that usually hangs out in the higher areas of the enclosure, is all of the sudden on the bottom, this may mean there is a sick mantid, or it has been injured. Always check this out if the mantid is acting differently than usual. You might find out there is something that you can do to rectify the matter.

Here's my species location:

Lobata almost always bottom

Hierodula majuscula switches back and forth

Ghosts most on top, some on bottom. Not much individual variation.

Carolinas on top

Idolos always top

Taumantis mostly on top but moves around

Popas always top

Hierodula Membranacea top
