As an entomologist, I highly value all bug books. So I thought it might prove helpful to others if we could post a Mantid book listing with some comments.

"The Praying Mantids" by Prete, Wells, Wells and Hurd. This book was definately not meant for hobbyists. A very tough read! Contains a wealth of info, but not species specific. It could use more photos and lots more color. I bought mine used at Amozon.com for $55 incl s/h.

"How to Know the Grasshoppers, Crickets, Cockroaches and their Allies" by Jacques R. Helfer. While this book is old, it does provide some good ID keys for US mantids. The range data is probably out of date. It deals only with the mantids that were in the US by 1963. It also helps ID walking sticks, earwigs, termites, roaches and rock crawlers. I got mine used at Amozon.com for $12 incl s/h. Well worth every penny!

"Grasshoppers and Mantids of the World" by Ken Preston-Mafham. Great generalist book on grasshoppers, mantids and roaches world-wide. Not species specific but packed full of good basic info. Worth picking up if you get a chance.

More to follow.

"Praying Mantids: Keeping Aliens" from Elytra & Antenna. This book is written with the hobbyist in mind. Well written and easy to read. It is packed full of info of use to a hobbiest of any experience level. However, the photos are a real let down. None are very good. But the text alone is worth the cost of the book. Highly recommended.

"Invertebrates Magazine" also by the folks at E&A. I have only the most recent issue. This also has very useful text and poor photos. This issue does not have any info on mantids however. Can anyone comment on other issues?
