I'm watching a male violin hop on a female's back right now. They have both been adults for at least seven weeks. She is not having any part of it, as she tore up his antennae and head. He's ok now and on her back, but she is flicking him with her back legs, flapping her wings, and running around like crazy. I can see his spermatophore and he is trying to transfer it.

Anybody ever witnessed this? My first round with Gongylus, I think I'm watching a crime!

you should use a different way of posting this instead of using the sexual assault terms!

LOL + 1 for why? This is too funny hahaha... And yeah... most species "rape" rather than "get" with their mate... And heck, in the nature of mantids, the females normally murder and eat the males anyways, so good for the male getting his way! lol

LOL I think your words are fine as brian said the female destrys the male most of the time (this is funny ) im suprised vios are usually not this bad you female may not be prducing pherms yet let her nice lil smell out for daddy to come get some have you noticed her abdomen pointing down yet??? she may just not be ready yet I would hate for you to see shields try to mate you may need some medical mental attention LMAO there rough breeders LOL just let ya boy rest a day or so feed him make sure he is ok try feeding her a small roach well he proceeds to mount her so shes busy eating ! I have had males with no heads at all mate great with females i have even placed a headless male onto a female and connect after he lost his head and get fertil oothicas LOL

@massaman:

I didn't mean to offend anyone, I just call em how I see em! The matings I've seen have all been pretty quickly decided: either the male gets chomped right away or he connects. I've never seen such a struggle.

The male eventually was pushed off the female though, he's pretty haggard looking. Her abdomen has been pointing down for awhile, now that I look back its been about nine weeks into adulthood for her, longer for the male. I don't know what happened to his spermatophore, does it drop out if not transferred? My other male got eaten so this dude needs to man up!
