hi every one just new to the hobby just had one qestion do you need to wait till spring to hatch your mantisis ive got several chineses and just staeted find eggcases in my locale ive also heard chinese mantids will live 12 to 14 months is this true thanks a bunch

The egg casing or ootheca will take 4-6 weeks to hatch and generally mantids live about 9 months in captivity, but about 12 in the wild. I started with the Chinese and they are still near and dear to my heart. I love them!

Welcome. No, you can allow the ooths to hatch whenever you want. However, if you intend on releasing them you should do that in the spring. Chinese mantids will not live that long. They live from spring to the start of winter in the wild, but may live a little longer in captivity. About eight months is probably about it.

If you're speaking of chinese that is not true. The poster asked about chinese mantis so you may not want to confuse anyone.

Hi and welcome to the Forum. You can start incubating your eggcases(ootheca) now if you want, but you'll be hatching hundreds of Chinese near Winter. If you live in a cold climate, your extra hatchlings that you let go outside will die. It will be better to hatch them in Spring because it is warmer but also you can capture wild feeder bugs during this time. If you live in the South then it may be okay to hatch because of the warm winters.

Dear me, all this conflicting advice!!! whats a mantis to do? Welcome to the confusing forum! ha, not ! we good people. I raise chinese year round, they usually hatch for me in middle of may for the ones I put outside in the fields, I bring any back in, in October when the cold and rain starts around holloween, which in case anyone wants to know is the 31st of Oct. Now saying all that, that gives them.... let's see....about may, june, july, aug, sep, oct. hah, 6 mts and they have lasted almost to the end of Dec. so that is 8 months, if I kept them inside, may be longer, never watched that, but maybe less, as I feel they do better outside with all the gutloading they can get. So, that's my insight for what it is worth.! :tt2:
