First thing to be familiar with is some of the Canon nomenclature for the buttons and dials to be used. These are listed on pages 10 and 11 of the manual, the ones used here are listed below:

Main Dial - wheel just behind the shutter button, turns with the right index finger. 'rising sun' symbol in the manual. You will use this the most.

Mode Dial - Big dial next to On/Off switch labelled A-DEP, M, Av, Tv, P, etc.

Av Button <Av+/-> Just below and left of the right thumb. (Not the <Av> mode on the Mode Dial.)

ISO Button <ISO> Top button of the 4-way keypad

White Balance Button <WB> Bottom button of the 4-way keypad

Pop-up flash button on front, upper left side.

For Macro shots with Flash in Manual mode

Settings for this exercise: f/11, 1/200 sec., ISO 400

1. Turn Mode Dial next to On/Off switch to <M> (between A-DEP and Av)

2. Turn Main Dial until the first number on the LCD and viewfinder read '200'. This is your shutter speed denominator in seconds. '200' in this setting = 1/200 sec.

3. Press and hold the <Av+/-> while turning the Main Dial until the 2nd number on the LCD and viewfinder read '11'. This is your Aperture setting = f/11.

4. Press <ISO> once. Turn Main Dial until the first (and only) number on the LCD (only) is 400.

5. Press <WB> once. Turn Main Dial until the 'lightning bolt' symbol is on on the LCD only. This is White Balance set to 'flash'.

6. Activate the pop-up flash. Press the button with the lightning bolt on the left front below the flash. You have to manually activate the flash in <M> mode.

On your back LCD, you should see '200 11' and the 'lightning bolt' (plus other symbols, etc). In the viewfinder just '200 11' and the light meter.

That's it! If you want more in focus, try f/16 or f/22 in step 3.

Happy shooting! :D
