Found this little guy (about 1/8th inch) on my car as I was about to leave the house. It had an awesome metallic abdomen and gold flecks on it's legs. Caught it so I can take it's pic when I got home. I decided to keep him/her, fed it some wingless fruit flies.
I saw the ID for this on bugguide about 3 weeks ago. I recognized it because I took pics. of this species (I believe) several years ago, here in Oregon, though your specimen appears less red than others I've seen.
They are a medium-sized species, I'd venture. Nothing on the order of our large Phidippus, but larger than your average zebra jumper.
Well, I just looked at my site again and I'd forgotten that yours lacks the white face that mine had. It looks otherwise similar, but is likely a different species after all. (making it even more interesting!)
Cool, someone on Bugguide identified it for me, it's a Sassacus vitis. It looks like juveniles are lighter and have a white face, but the adults are much blacker.
