Many times I see posts where peeps say.... Your bug is gonna molt tonight." Ect. How does one know this? Also, talking about posture what is the difference? How do they hang differently as opposed to not molting? I know they stop eating and will bat at food ect. Iam trying to witness my sub adult female molt to adult. But not sure when it's gonna happen. I can make out her wing buds ect. But she molted already less than two weeks ago. Now, she is upside down and extending her raptors like a stretch. Iam hopin it's a stretch. I read somewhere that when the raptors go below the head it's a bad sign. Any thoughts?

with my stagmos ive noticed that they legs are spread pretty far apart. and i have seen them gripping and re-gripping the top as if they are trying to get the best hold possible.(which they are.) ive also notice that they will get what i call "the jitters" its like they are shivering. (and i have read on other threads that it is when they are trying to loosen up their skin.) now with all the sp. ive noticed that when it it happening they will pulsate bending the abdomen back and forth. (wiggling out of the skin)

i hope this helps a litle bit. i can only say based off of my own observations and whet i have read on other threads

In addition to what D Hemptress said, I've noticed with a lot of species they hold their raptors out in front of them in a strange way (kind of like their raising their elbows )

Agreed! but i havent observed this all sp.

for instance my tenedora female just does that anyway.... (she thinks she it tricky... but i know she's not a stick! )

Lol my popas do that whenever I walk by lol thanks for the input. She walked to the bottom of her cup and snatched up two crix so Iam guessing she is just stretching. I moved her into a nice mesh cube and it was quite funny. I put her cup in there and watched her climb out and into the sides. An hour later she was back in her cup and wouldn't come out. Lol she's out now but I had to take her cup out. Too small for her at this point but man she wasn't giving it up!

Yeah they'll stretch like that when they clean themselves and whatnot, but I notice my Idolo and wahlberghi would always let the very tips of their raptorials hang just a little open in a position that looks to me more like they are relaxing. they would usually molt that night or the next day. but sometimes they did just seem to be relaxing.

I know that my older(last two molts) mantids will molt soon, within a day or 2, when the tip of their abdomen stays open and doesn't close. This is only after their wingbuds are not only swollen, but appear lifted from the body. The mantids will pulsate with a rythym as well, like they are breathing heavily, but not fast. A posture can be kind of tricky, depending on the mantis.

With everything that has been said, that is basically all about it...spread stance, gripping and re-gripping, jitters, pulsating, slightly opened raptors, raptors held out slightly in front of them, lifted swollen wingbuds, and open abdomen is usually what you will see if you are observant and watching closely and knowing what to look and watch for.

How are the popas Lark?

All the best,

Andrew

Hey you!

The Popas are marvelous L4s. Except for the stagler but he is L3 and happy as a stick. They are the funniest little guys. Every time they see me they are like, "OMG! Iam a stick!!!!!! Look away lady!"

Hmmmm. Not sure if she was content with her cup or just afraid of the realization that the world was bigger than her cup. She sat on the floor of the mesh cup for hours and I finally encouraged her to climb up some sticks. She seemed grumpy so not sure if she is gonna molt or just annoyed with the change.
