What should I look for other the no interesting food?

• The mantis will run from the food u put in with it or strike it but not grab it. It will probably stay in one place not moving. but the striking at
  
• food is a sure sign

The two other things to look for are swollen wing buds on latter instar levels (takes some experience to notice this), and a very few will develop a white wash on their exoskeleton. The lack of eating and staying in one place upside down are the most common though as pointed out by Rebecca.

No problem, it is easy to over look as it is only available in a few instars.
