Hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone would happen to know what species of moth this is?

I found it outside of my dorm in Northern Arizona and thought it was beautiful. The abdomen is soooo fluffy!!!

Thanks for your help, guys! I think Hyalophora columbia is a match :)

Looks like a Hyalophora columbia which is very similar to a Cecropia. Do you know if you have columbia in your area?
According to the Mississippi State University's moth website, they are indeed in Northern Arizona. This is the first moth I have seen in my lifetime that had any distinct characteristics. I've only seen those little white/greyish moths that are attracted to porch lights before.

Aren't they cool? Some of us on the forum raise giant silk moths. I've been raising Actias Luna for several years and have had Cecropia off and on. I found a cocoon from a wild polyphemus (I think) in my yard last month.

They are very cool! Actias Lunas are beautiful. I have yet to see one in person. It is so neat that you raise them! The school I am attending in California is practically infested with silk worms right now. I have no idea what species they are though.

Take some photos of them and post them.
Here is a macro photo of one of the worms that my got on my friend's shirt.

I will take some more photos today when I go to class. There are tons of them hanging down from the tree branches by threads of silk. All of the railings, benches, and trash cans are also completely covered with them. You can imagine how much people are freaking out and worrying they have worms on them :p
