Not my videos, but too cool not to share...

"Came across this vid recorded by researcher Damian Elias of a male jumping spider (Salticidae) trying very very hard to excite a female jumping spider. Make sure you turn up the volume on your speakers...the sounds are half the act."

One of the creepiest spiders I've ever seen!

"Portia the jumping spider. Possibly my favorite of all animals and definitely my fave invertabrate. I spotted this one on one of my trips to Malaysian Borneo in 2008. Will be looking for more o these on our future trips for longer videos."

Accepted 30 July 2003 Visual displays in jumping spiders have long been known to beamong the most elaborate animal communication behaviours. Wenow show that one species, Habronattus dossenus, also exhibitsan unprecedented complexity of signalling behaviour in the vibratory(seismic) modality. We videotaped courtship behaviour and usedlaser vibrometry to record seismic signals and observed thateach prominent visual signal is accompanied by a subsequent seismiccomponent. Three broad categories of seismic signals were observed (`thumps',`scrapes' and `buzzes'). To further characterize these signalswe used synchronous high-speed video and laser vibrometry andobserved that only one seismic signal component was producedconcurrently with visual signals. We examined the mechanismsby which seismic signals are produced through a series of signalablation experiments. Preventing abdominal movements effectively `silenced'seismic signals but did not affect any visual component of courtshipbehaviour. Preventing direct abdominal contact with the cephalothorax, while still allowing abdominal movement, only silenced thump andscrape signals but not buzz signals. Therefore, although thereis a precise temporal coordination of visual and seismic signals, this is not due to a common production mechanism. Seismic signalsare produced independently of visual signals, and at least threeindependent mechanisms are used to produce individual seismicsignal components.

Wow, awesome find. Great video. Loved the "click, click" as he moved closer. Like a scary movie.

I'm pretty impressed with his display and I'm not a spider!
