There's nothing like the first time!

Thanks to Vivian for the ooth :)

Laid on 2/15/09 about 1 1/2" long and hatched 41 nymphs yesterday 4/2/09. Temps were approximately 69 to 75F.

Thanks! And I must say, they all remind me of Ed Grimley from SNL for those old enough to remember...

Have you given them little triangles, yet?
 forgot about that! :p

No activity yesterday, but two more popped out from the middle of the ooth while I was out...

Surprising thing about the bird-dropping mimic ootheca is that the zipper doesn't really open as far as I can tell.

I photographed a spent Ghost ooth recently and thought the pics were pretty neat. Where the nymphs emerged is like little scales pulled back, which you can see in your photo also. I think the nymph at the far right got stuck and died.

I love the pic of the L1 and L2 together! It's like the L2 is saying, "Get off of me, and leave me alone!" :p

 I thought that pic was, "hey big bro, why haven't *I* molted yet!"

Katnapper, thanks for your ooth pic too. Yours definitely look more like little doors that stayed open while mine mostly closed after exiting. My humidity was very high in that cup with a layer of wet foam on the bottom and a second solid lid with a ~2" hole in it to reduce the escape of moisture. I suspect that the poor stuck one might have been too dry. Seen it before on one of my European ooths, so I cranked up the humidity for some species after that. Perhaps that's why your zipper doors stayed open and mine closed on their own.

Actually, that ooth is one that hatched in the post in transit... so I had no control over the humidity prior to or during hatching. It's an interesting observation/theory that higher humidity might allow the "doors" to close back up once the nymphs exit. And conversely, drier conditions may cause them stay open (dry and harden that way quicker, or maybe just not be as flexible to allow re-closing?) after the nymphs exit.
