My male Carolina mantis, using expert precaution, instead of grasping the thorax of the fidgety female he grabbed one of her arms using both of his forearms so that one of her arms are pinned. When my female tried to eat him she couldn't reach down because of her pinned leg. [SIZE=13.63636302948px]This is ingenuous and if all males did this they would not get eaten. [/SIZE]

Mmm... I'm not too sure. I mean females are way stronger. If she really wanted to get the male, she would have succeed. If the male wanted to prevent her from using one of her fore legs he would need to apply a lot of pressure, which in turn would hurt the female and trigger an aggressive reaction.

She probably was a bit confused while trying to free up her leg and turning around to see whats causing it to be stuck.
