My Chinese mantis ootheca is hatching! so far four are out, and they are coming out one-by-one

 I'm so excited!

I have a few questions about them also...

should i feed them right away or should i wait 24 hrs/ until they are all out?

How many could hatch?

Will there be a big die off? when?

More questions to come!

How nice that is too cool, don't feed them now, wait until 3rd day, by that time they should be ready for their first meal, depending on ootheca size it could yield from about 150 to 300, and yes, probably many of them won't make it as they have a very high mismoult rate, a hardy species though, you can probably raise many of them if kept with the proper conditions, congrats for your hatching, it is always exciting to watch it :D

It really is awesome when they start hatching. Especially if you've waited a while.

Oh and if you're looking to keep one or a couple, I'd say separate about 20. If you separate 20 you'll probably end up with 1, 2, 3 survivors. That's according to experience, though, it's not definite.

Ok i will :)

also how long should it take for all of them to hatch? so far only four have come out :\

Sometimes a few will hatch, then the rest will hatch the next day. That's fairly common. In fact, I have a M. religiosa ooth that started hatching 10 days ago and still hatches out one of two babies per day! :)

That happened to me too with a Tenodera sinensis ootheca. 4 came out one day. 5 came out the next. 4 days later, a few more came out. But then that was it. I only got 16 from the ootheca. I'm not sure why that happens but sometimes it just does. You may end up with more than I did, there's no knowing, really.

ok thanks! I removed the four that hatched and moved them to another container and will probably do the same with the rest :) I'll see if i can post any pics

You guys were right! about 20 hatched earlier

Also would this species do good in a community setup? or would they be likely to cannibalize? could i keep all of the nymphs in one container (large) until they are a little older?
