When I got home today, I noticed my only chinese mantid, a female, had laid an egg sac. She has never been with a male of the species. I know that some other insects can reproduce without male, but I don't know if mantids can.

Thanks for any help with this.

I think the ooth is not fertile.

I have read that other species are parthenogenic.

what are those species?

Thanks

Hey swoosh, thanks for the quick response.

I am not sure I understand what species you are asking about.

The mantis I have is a Tenodera aridifolia sinensis.

The other insect species I was refering to that are parthenogenic are some walking sticks and I am sure that there are more out there, that is the only one I am familair with.

I appreciate your help.

The common name of your mantis is a Chinese mantis. The newly laid ootheca will probably not hatch... so you can either put it somewhere for display or see if any ooth-collector here wants it.

I have a Chinese Mantis that has laid 2 oothecae. The last one is very tiny. I did have her with a male but I believe it was a false mating as I saw him ride her but never copulating. I think that they can lay ooths even if not dertilized. I doubt very much they will hatch but I am holding onto them just in case.
