Hi, my name is Janie and I live in Columbus, Ohio. I am new to both this forum and the hobby. I started only this year by hatching a Chinese ootheca I found outdoors, then ordering a couple from eBay (I know, I know) because it was so much fun taking care of the first. I was researching what to feed the nymphs I didn't give away to local gardeners or set loose (about 30 to start with) and was surprised to find that not only are there 2000 other species of mantis out there, but that other people enjoyed their company as much as I did if not more, and were raising some of those other species.
As of now I only have 2 left of the original 30 Chinese--2 male subadults, one green and one brown. I will try to post photos later (I'm new to stuff like this too). I managed to get ahold of a couple of exotic oothecae (ghost and I believe the other is Indian Flower, but I'll have to double check). I do not yet know if these are fertile as I didn't know the people I got them from personally and didn't do the proper "homework" beforehand.
I have been perusing these forums for a couple weeks and l have learned a lot just by reading everyone else's posts. Thanks to everyone for all the super-helpful information. I look forward to getting to know you and your mantids!
