So i ran out of flies for L1  C. gemmatus nymphs a few days back. The local pet store only had maggots with some pupae for sale so i should have flies in a few days but it will be almost a week without the nymphs eating. Is there anything else i can feed them with? Cricket pieces on a piece of string or honey?

Honey should be used as a snack.I do not know about straight honey.i believe it's gonnambe mixed with bee pollen as well.but I could be wrong.

To be honest I never run out of food for my little buddies, but it does happen.

Your mantis will eat The fruit fly larvae.just put them right in front of your mantis, they will squirm and it will catch the attention of your mantis.as long as they are moving your mantis will eat the larvae

Glad to see you got fruit flies! Yeah, running out of fruit flies is seriously annoying, but I think feeding honey to your mantis in the meantime is better than nothing. Also, you could look for small wild caught insects. Like a lot of native mantises eat aphids, so sometimes I go outside and find some of them, if I am really desperate.

Always an easy backup is to get a butterfly net and wave it back and forth across the grass. You will nab tons of ff and baby flies and a variety of different things! I use a small shop vacuum after the capture and use it to suck all the bugs to the end of the net. Pinch it off and turn the net inside out and open the mix of bugs into the enclosure. I've also heard of taking a net cubes and waving across the grass for a similar approach to feeding your nymphs. No matter where you are summer allows you this option if you run out of ff cultures
