hello all, by memorial day weekend i should have tons of luna moth, Actias luna, eggs available
i am posting this now because the eggs take 8-12 days to hatch so i have to send them fresh so they arrive before hatching, i have 16 luna cocoons, at least 6 are female, each female lays between 100 and 300 eggs, more than enough for me
luna larvae are simple and fun to rear, indoors they can be reared in tupperware and jars, outside in vented buckets, net cages, or rearing sleeves, they get abt as big as an index finger before spinning loose cocoons in leaves
larvae eat birch, sweetgum, hickory, walnut, poplar, tulip tree, persimmon, sumac, pecan, elm, and sometimes oak maple and black willow
larvae mature in 20-40 days depending on food and temperature, cocoons take 9-12 days to eclose if another brood will occur, or overwinter and eclose abt 4 weeks after the weather gets nice
adults eat nothing and females can be set out to attract wild males and will lay eggs in paper bags
adults live 13-15 days
very beautiful moths indeed, here are a few pics i took last year, i will try to photograph whole life cycle this year
i anticipate having eggs within abt 3 weeks, so if u want some shoot me a pm so i can put your name on a list
eggs will be packed in straws and sent out in envelopes morning after being laid
when u recieve them, put in airtight tupperware container with NO leaves, when larvae hatch pour eggs/eggshells into separate cup and offer cut foliage to larvae
wrap cut end of leaves in wet paper towel and wrap that in aluminum foil
if keeping indoors be sure to keep in airtight containers since larvae are prone to dessication when younger
i am workin on a caresheet for them even though they r pretty simple and a quick internet search or series of pms can answer all your questions
so i am offering the eggs for trade
lookin for:
eggs of hyalaphora columbia columbia and citheronia regalis
luna moth eggs of unrelated stock
phyllocrania paradoxa
insect or amphibian supplies
feeder insects (such as roaches)
anything really, if u have anything u wanna trade for however many luna eggs lemme know, not really lookin for much if anythin in exchange my goal is to increase gene pool of my stock and spread lunas around the country
do not send anything in return until u recieve luna eggs
if they dont arrive or arrive hatched then i will try sending more if more females eclose or when second brood comes, same thing goes for if they don't hatch
just pm me if interested, US only
thanx
