I have currently 2 female Stagmomantis (green) - i thought they were Californica (i live in LA county) but now I am thinking they may be Limbata because a third one I caught and released 2 weeks ago was rose/pink colored.

Anyways, of the two I have, the first I caught a bit over a week ago - super crawly, strong, fast, alert and healthy seeming. This one eats voraciously crickets, waxworms and house flies.

The second one my wife caught outside my law office in the dirt. This one is smaller, seems more mellow and is much less voracious of an eater.

Anyways, I am really hoping that one or both of these will lay an ooth but am not sure they will. I have no idea if these mated but I understand they will lay ooths anyways.

Has the time for laying ooths already passed or not yet arrived for these gals?

Is there anything I can do to encourage them to lay ooths?

Thanks

The care for both species is the same. Keep them indoors warm and fed. They will likely lay another ooth if they are healthy. Since they are wild they are most likely mated.

This is the right time for Stagmomantis sp. to produce oothecae. In the wild, it could start as early as July and end when the first freezing temperature sets in, depending on location. In captivity, female will continue laying egg cases until she is too old to produce. You can feed her plenty of food and provide enclosure with wood sticks for her to start laying ootheca. All the best!
