I have a few questions I am puzzled about.

1. Once T. graminis lays her ooth how do I detach it from its surface without messing up the ooth?

2. Has anyone hatched an ooth from this spices before? If so what technique did you use to hatch the ooth?

3. What ooth is considered the best one to keep and hatch? I read this spices lays like 20 ootheca and I want to be sure to keep the best one for myself?

4. How often do I need to mate her to keep her ootheca from becoming sterile?

Thanks, K.J.

Dont have to worry once they successfully mated. She will be fertile till she dies and can still rebreed her but once it is a success then no need to do it again. I have had some good success with the orthodera species ooths hatching. Usually I would carefully remove a ooth from where it is. If its placed on a branch or a vine then I would cut the branch and leave the ooth on the piece and glue the piece of wood with ooth on the bottom of the 32oz cups lids. I also would glue the ooths to a small piece of wood and glue the wood to the underside of the lids of the cups!

Awesome! How do I know if they successfully mated? The male was in the female for a little over an hour and then he flew away!

When I remove the ootheca should I do it as soon as she lays it or wait a few days then remove it?

Thanks for your comments they are really helpful ^.^

Learn punctuation!!

I do not have to if I dont want to and I am too lazy to do it correctly!

Kids kids, go to your corners now...

@K.J. usually the 1st one is considered the best ootheca (don't forget me :p ). Also I'd try remating...and did you see them connect? - Just saw your other thread, mating seemed good, but remating wouldn't hurt.

LoL  Malti is too funny!

Ah okay cool so I will definitely keep the 1st ootheca for myself. Should I remate the following day? Or wait a few days then remate them? Thanks a lot for your info it is really helping answer my questions.

Also if you have the answer, How do I store an ooth to keep it fresh for when I ship it to someone? or say I don't want to hatch them this year but next year? Is that possible?

must be something in our water

I think you could mate before she starts laying...I've never mated mantises yet so anyone with more exp than me, can chip in - also re ooths...got an idea how to hatch them, but never did it myself.

I have a few questions I am puzzled about.

1. Once T. graminis lays her ooth how do I detach it from its surface without messing up the ooth?

The ootheca is small and could break into two easily. The best is still to leave the ootheca as it is by removing the female, or try to cut the piece out from where the ootheca attached to.

2. Has anyone hatched an ooth from this spices before? If so what technique did you use to hatch the ooth?

Leave it around 80-85F/40-50%. Ootheca only takes about 3 weeks to hatch

3. What ooth is considered the best one to keep and hatch? I read this spices lays like 20 ootheca and I want to be sure to keep the best one for myself?

Ootheca that doesn't look deform has better chance of hatching

4. How often do I need to mate her to keep her ootheca from becoming sterile?

From my experience the hatching rate drop after 4-5 ootheca, maybe female does not have a good storage room for spermaphore so if you have the male pair them up again after she deposited multiple oothecae

Thanks, K.J.
Good luck KJ! hatchlings are really tiny but will still be able to handle small fruit flies. Spring tail is alright too as feeder.

WoW Thank you Yen! Your answers where more than helpful! I already have people who want some of these mantids :)

So I am trying my best to make this happen!

Thanks, K.J.
