My friend and I caught an ant mantis in school and i took it home. I think it's too panicked to eat because it is just getting used to captivity or is there some other reason? The ant mantis keeps running away from its prey. Ant mantids are supposed to be really ferocious right or is it because it is too panicked? Do mantids do that after they are caught from the wild?

I have noticed this in wild caught mantids. Give it a few days to settle and then try feeding it.

Yeah they dont eat all the time such as coming up to or after a molt or being full or disturbed (some) :)

Thanks for your help. :D I'll try to feed her tomorrow or the day after but what i noticed today was that after i put a mosquitoe inside her cage, after a hours i found out it was gone. I saw some mosquitoe wings on the floor so i assume she ate it and spat out the wings.

What i've also noticed is that the ant mantid is 'shivering' is this normal? Her abdomen is moving up and down but she can't be releasing phermones because she is still a nymph as she does not have wings. Her 'claws' are shivering the most. It looks like her 'claws' are jerking. Is this normal? She also keeps on stretching out her 'claws' while shaking them.

"Ant Mantis' is a common name that used for a few species. Do you know which yours is? I'm asking as I am curious as to what you caught agree but agree with the answers below regardless of the species i.e. your mantis needs to mellow out as much as possible. Even stuff like turning its container upside down so that the food offered falls towards the mantis might contribute to the stress of being captive. Just make sure it gets enough water during its hunger strike. I have a mantis on hunger strike right now but it still almost lays on it's belly to lap up water.
