Sadly down south in Brooklyn, you won't find mantids as people will have less gardens and parks.

Yet when I used to stay in the catskills I could always find some.

Warpdrive, I believe there is a population of mantis religiosa in Floyd Bennett park. I have seen pics on bugguidenet.com. You should check it out!

It is great to see where mantids can be collected. I have no luck around here.
Have you checked out some of the parks in your area? I was in Tampa last month. I did not get a chance to check out the parks there.

I won't make that mistake next time.

I found my first mantis and an ooth in a park that is in the same city that I live. Unfortunately, I just don't think I am looking deep enough into the brush. I am too afraid of getting hurt by other things, like spiders and venomous snakes.

Last time I went to that park, I was looking for roaches, because I have given up trying to find the elusive mantids. I came across a black widow spider under a piece of cardboard, and she ran straight at me.
 I know she was just trying to find a place to hide, but I felt my skin crawling for a couple of hours after that.

Here in the Bronx, i don't have to worry about running or jumping into snakes or spiders. I occasionally trip over dead bodies, or step on used needles. Of course I'm joking!

When i went NC last fall. I was jumping in the brush looking for mantids, and whatever else i could find. My friend was with me and was like ###### are you doing? With this crazy serious face on. I asked what the problem was? And he replied i don't know where we are. I really don't feel like looking for a hospital, because you stepped on a poisonous snake!

I'm glad he said that. I did not even think about that.

Im surprised we've never bumped into each other since we share the same hunting grounds in pelham ;-) Tampa has plenty of spots, pretty much any wooded area will have lots of grisea.

Maybe we might have bumped into each other back in the day? I'm quite discrete when I'm hunting mantids. Most people would think I'm nuts, or ask what I'm looking for. Not to mention during the day there are some shady characters wandering about.

I was only in tampa for a few days. Thanks for the info.

I do plan on going back. I would have loved to find some wild Stagmomantis floridensis,

I didn't recognize you when I purchased them FFs from you a while back, but maybe this summer we can team up on the mantis hunt at Pelham. I agree aswell with the "shady characters"... might sound crazy but they do witchcraft and voodoo back there... ive stumbled across there ritual remains, and drawings in the dirt with stones in a circle and upside down stars in the middle... weird eh o_0

Yes, MantisNation let me know when your here in the Bronx? We can grab a couple of beers, catch a few mantids, and take out some devil worshipers!

Of course everybody is invited!
