Folks,

After 30 years, I am looking to get or more mantis again. I am not sure what species I want, but I do know that for my first foray back that I want big, green, hardy, standard looking mantis. These top my list is no particular order:

Chinese Mantis (Tenodera aridifolia sinensis)

Giant Malaysian Mantis (Hierodula trimaculata)

Giant Asian Mantis (Hierodula membranacea)

Giant Indian Mantis (Hierodula grandis)

Are there other large species that I should consider? I could use some advice as to where I can buy these and as to what species would be best to get or at least an idea of what issues there might be raising them. I would also like to know which species is biggest. I would like to know about special heat and humidity requirements as well.

I understand that the Chinese Mantis is the only species that could be released into the wild in the USA.

Regards,

Giant Malaysian Shield mantid. They are big and aggressive.

mantisplace.com has both the ooth and the mantid.

Any more input?? Please keep in mind that I want a standard looking mantid.

Let me add some information. Where I live, my house can sometimes get into the high 50's and low 60's (F) in the the Fall and Winter. Does this preclude any or all of the Hierodula mantids? Or would I need some kind of heating pad? Where would I get one of those? Or should I wait until the spring to get Hierodula mantids?

That's a little cold for them, a lot of people put a light over them. I always suggest sitting their container on a tv, or something that gives off more heat.
