Last night, one of my L3 ghost mantids molted to L4. Two of her siblings were nearby, and I left the room for a minute. I came back to find one of her sisters eating the freshly molted ghost's raptorial arm! I separated them, and treated the wounds with honey. She was still in good shape, although she had lost half of her raptorial arm, an antenna, and a walking leg. THis morning she looked ok, but she rapidly went downhill after that. She died a few minutes ago, sadly. :(

They are supposed to be communal, but cannibalism happens sometimes, especially if the victim is weak or vulnerable like after a molt.

I'm sorry for your loss. It sounds like you did about as good of a job  treating it as you could.

We are currently trying to decide whether to house ours communally or not. I think we will keep them separate just to prevent any potential problems, but they would look so nice together. How big of a group do you keep together? Do you have many problems with cannibalism?

They do fine communally most of the time. The certainly look beautiful that way! If you keep them well fed and give them enough space they should not cannibalize.

I had a similar occurrence of ghost cannibalism (about an hour after a feeding, rather than after a molt) that also resulted in death despite appearing to be well on the road to recovery.

It sucks, no matter the circumstances. Sorry for your loss!

Thanks. I will miss her, but I still have her four sisters and her brother! (and stepbrothers and stepsisters on the way)

I have decided to give my ghosts their own home. I don't want that the one eat the other. ;) they are my first ghosts and don't wanna loose them.
