Please spare a kind thought for Sunny before you go to bed tonight.
Every two months or so, Sunny gives me a desperate call between 7a.m. and 8a.m. Some disaster has occurred, maybe a cat has vanished and we need to find it, or she heard a woman scream during during the night and she wants me to go with her and check the house next door. So I wasn't surprised yesterday when she called at 8a.m. in tears saying something about "burned" and asking me to come right over. I tossed a tube of burn lotion in my kit to be on the safe side and off Tucker and I went.
It wasn't until I turned the corner and saw the fire trucks outside her door that I realized that it wasn't she who had been burned. Apparently, passing neighbors had hammered on the door to say that their garage was on fire. Poor Lisa was still in hysterics when I got there, but Sunny was the unsung heroine of the day. She checked on the location of the fire, told everyone not to open the garage door and saved one of the cats, the youngest. Alas, when the Fire dept arrived, they wouldn't let anyone back in the house, of course, and five of the eight cats died of smoke inhalation.
Fortunately, though, although there was smoke damage throughout the house, no one was hurt but me. Sunny and I are not hugging people, so when I went to give her a hug, I stepped on some water bottles and lost my balance. Fortunately, I was able to catch myself against two large plants with my hands and forearms. Unfortunately, the two large plants were cacti, but I think that I have gotten most of the spikes out by now.
I suggested to Sunny who was being very brave and rational that she take out some time after she got to bed to weep her eyes out. I hope she did.
Today we went through the house to rescue "essentials" including Sunny's WoW Authenticator (!) and I emptied the freezer and fridge so that they won't be knocked down by the smell of rotting food when they get back.
So send some good vibes her and her mom's way. Thank you.
