Interesting article - also, those are some super cool looking mantids! Anyone know what kind those are? Presumably they are from Australia but perhaps not.

Yeah. This a genus, of course, not a species. They are tree mantids living in Queensland and I think, in Northern Australia. Here is the paper by Holwell et al, who was interviewed by the reporter:

James: This should be of particular interest for you, given that the authir is a post doc from yr uni, and the emphasis on male mantid genitalia. :D Ever see any of this genus? I know that they are a bit to the north of you.

Very interesting and gives me something to look for. Not all females bend their abdomens up and clean up.

That was a very informative article. I reminisced about the good old days when Mozzie the Purple Winged Mantid was alive, the one with the massive goolies  & he was very much to the left, like most human men too, I believe. I know I've set myself up once again but don't you dare, Phil... ;)

I'm from Sydney Uni, mate. My lecturers don't put as much emphasis on insect genetalia as Macquarie. :) It's more extracurriculum work. Ew no! N this mantid is way way too far north for me. Interestingly enough, Olga & I are thinking of a Queensland trip, which means "we're going on a mantid hunt! We hope we catch a big one!" NEOMANTIS!!!

you mean a mantis like this?http://www.ento.csiro.au/aicn/images/cain3790.jpg

wings look little too big to me though!
I think they look cool. They're called 'Leaf-Winged/Net-Winged Mantids.' They are about the same size as Snake Mantids (see: 'Australian Species' in Mantid Photos) except they have these huge dappled wings, almost like a turtle shell. They are also one of the few mantids that hunts nocturnally.

uuurgh. Maquarie uni is a hole. This is probably the most exciting research project theyve had in years.

Don't you mean 'Macquarie High.' Great for Ancient History & pot :D

This just in: Because of your unfair and unkind remarks about Macquarie University, Dr. Holwell has been obliged to move to the University of Aukland, and I just hope that you're both happy now. <_<
