I've only seen pictures of fat bootied lady mantises ready to pop before, never one that is in the process of getting big. This pretty lady's been around the garden center for about a week. She's darker than any mantis I've seen before and has an almost purple hue, I've actually only ever seen her chilling on a certain dark purple grassy plant. Today I found her over 100 feet away on our forklifts. She has become very skittish, tracking every movement within 3 feet with her head and also now has furled wings. She will not display when I tried to prod her into it and she also will not eat.
Anyone can see her wings aren't in the right position but I have outlined a spot on her abdomen that has "puffed out" I guess, its not the same on the other side but oddly there is a layer of skin under it just like normal. Are these fall/heat/predator injury signs or does she have several dozen in the oven?
