as some of yo know one of my creo recently mated. and today she is acting very lethargic. with the fact that she is huge, she can barely move herself. im wondering how long it generally takes for them to lay their ooth? and should i be worried about her hurting herself and/or dying? she fell to the bottom of her enclosure just a bit ago. she appears to be fine, but i helped her get back up on some sticks because she was having such a hard time.

What have you been feeding her?
she has been eating the same as all my other mantids. flies, moths, gypsy flies, and some crickets ive had for awhile(i gut load my own, so i know it wasnt a pet shop cricket) mostly hf and bb tho my creos dont seem to care so much for the silk moths i offe rthem

Maybe the moths were exposed to pesticides...?

I mean, if pesticides were strong enough to almost wipe out bald eagles in America, it could almost definitely wipe out a predator with more direct contact with "infected" prey.

no hun, the moths i have are silk worm moths and ive had them since they were micro worms. i know for a fact it wasnt that. if it was pestisides the only wild caught feeders were the gypsy flies and it would be that

My opinion is eggbound, but it almost seems to short of a time for death already from it . I think you can tell sometimes, cause with Alice she even stopped pooping and was trying to lay for a week or more.

it seems strange to me that it would be so soon aswell, but thats what it seems.... i dunno, it was making me sad trying to watch her get around tho. i knew something was wrong with her. i just figured she was getting ready to find a place to lay her ooth. she was make a funny pumping motion, but then she started getting more and more lethargic.

Yeah, eggbound sounds right.

That was my second theory, but, I wasn't sure.

and "gypsy flies" are actually called crane flies by the way, i dont know why i call them that i always have since i was kid
I understand. Mmmmm, my mantises love crane flies. Gypsy flies sounds must more mystical, though.

i just read that crane flies do not usually eat when thay are adults, they just mate and then die, so i dont think its a pesticide that was ingested by another bug.(i suppose it could have been on their bodies) so im thinking egg-bound. just from the way she looked and the way she was acting, she didnt seem sick at all, she just seemed to have trouble walking. she had no trouble catching and destroying feeders

I've done about 10 minutes of research on crane flies. They live close to water, so any aquatic pesticides that are run-off could build up in their body.

Also, as larvae they eat decaying matter, which could also have toxic build up in it.

And, yes, they don't feed on anything.

i didnt realize anyhing they ate as larvae would cause an issue as an adult... i guess ill have to stay away from crane flies. thats too bad... because they love them!

I'm not even sure what I said is true. I'm assuming right now. That was just a minor suspicion I had. Otherwise, I think egg-binding is the culprit.

i believe she was egg-bound aswell. but i think just to be safe ill go ahead and stay away from them. maybe only if im desperate for feeders. they are always in the hallways of my apartment building so i would just grab one off the wall when i was passing by. ill just keep going from now on, im sure my bf would love that anyway

Bummer. I know the feeling, especially for the deaths that happen right after a mating. Sucks on so many levels.

What other species do you have? If you still have the male, I'm sure there's a couple people on the forum looking for one.

i have stagmomantis limbbata, tenodera, and some ghosts. but i still have two female creos that im going to let the boy get at. i was just letting have some resting time
