Our S. Californica is a smallish specimin with a camoflage colors cheme of black, white, and grey. These are delicate mantids and ours has a sparse appetite and only eats brains. Very wasteful eater indeed. Found in my front yard on 10-25-08 on a Mexican Sage plant flower. She first Oothed on 10/30/08 - this odd, papery little ooth was wedged in a corner of her "critter keeper" cage and we are currently incubating it.
Happy to find that last night or this morning she laid another ooth - more than a month after the last one, too. She was not very fat - especially compared to the S. Limbatas which are huge. This ooth is larger and has a well formed zipper, unlike the first one. Both, however, were wedged in corners on two sides so they are a bit odd shaped. Tomorrow this ooth is on its way to Hibiscusmile over at mantisplace.com where she will hopefully be able to keep it in culture, if the ooth is fertile.
Yay.
Here is a pic of both Ooths:
(pic to come soon - taking it tonight but not on a digital - have to get it developed and put on cd, aaaaagghh!)
