I apologize if this topic has been visited before, but I spent most of the morning searching and can't quite figure this out. We have always had s. carolinas around the yard, as well as Chinese mantids. I usually keep an eye on the ooths outside and bring a few to the deck to keep over the winter and eventually put some in containers for hatching. We've had good success with the Chinese ooths but I have never kept a Carolina ooth. I usually just bring some carolina babies inside once I find that they have hatched in the yard.
So, my question is...thanks to a nice plump female Carolina I found in the yard a few days ago, I now have a lovely ooth. I'd like to hatch it so I can have mantids over the winter. I'm prepared container-wise to care for lots of nymphs. It was laid a few days ago and right now is on a twig in an enclosure in my office. Does it need to get cold for it to be viable? If cold is necessary, how long? Or, will it just hatch without a cold period, and if so, how long?
I love caring for the carolinas, and I want to make this a success.
Thanks for the help!
Rebecca
