Hello Mantid Community,

My handle is Pun1sh3R (as you couldn't tell already). I am a 37 year old Father of two.  5 year old Boy and a 2 1/2 year old girl.  I live in Southern California, but work on the North Slope (Prudhoe Bay) of Alaska in the Oil Industry.

So what brings me to this forum?  I'm sure most came for the same reasons... Mantids.

My son is at the age where he is really fascinated by bugs.  Rolly Pollys right now.  Loved seeing the carpenter beetle that flew into our patio.  Knows insects have 6 legs, abdomen, thorax and spiders have 8.  I find it amazing to relive the excitement of the "New" through his young eyes (Mundane/overlooked to me now).  Watched a garden spider catch a moth in its web and wrap it up.  So many honest questions can come out of little people.

I have kept reptiles through the years.  The List includes Beardies, Water Dragon, Veiled Chameleon, Pygmy Chameleons, Box turtles, Water Turtles and an African Spur thigh tortoise.

I became aware of bugs as pets many years ago.  And have always been fascinated with the (unknown to me knowledge) Mantid.  But I never took the plunge.

Now SWMBO (She who must be obeyed) is talking about getting a Isopod farm for the boy for the Holidays.  I love the idea and want to maybe take it a step further for my own selfish interests (Getting a/some Mantids).

One of the things I loved about the Pygmy Chameleons was the small vivarium and the natural environment.  I did not know about Bioactive set ups then, but have read up on them recently.  My ideal set up at this time would be something similar.  Maybe a 12"x12"x12" with a communal speicies.

Long story short; I'm here for knowledge and shared experience.  Hopefully in the future my family and I will be keepers of these amazing creatures.

I have a few books by Mr. Orin McMonigle in my Amazon cart.  Once pay day hits I plan on ordering them.

I am open to any and all information I can get (Discussions, Links, resources, etc.)

Thank you for having me.

Welcome! I am new here, too but I'm excited to meet others who love Mantises as much as I do.

Ghost Mantises are easy to raise and can be kept communally, that may be a good one for you and your family to try.

I just got "Keeping the Praying Mantis" by Orin and it is excellent! I highly recommend it, when payday arrives.

welcome :)

You should buy a mantis for sure. They are amazing. Good beginner species are hierodula memanacea. They are big when adults. There is a lot info about our favorite insects to find here. :)

Welcome to the forum! If you are looking for a GREAT, cool looking, communal species you should try Phyllocrania paradoxa ghost mantis. I breed them, and love them a lot!
