As a lot of you know I'm not big on breeding but if I do happen to get a healthy adult male and female of the same species I often feel it is only fair to let them have some fun time.
Okay for a little back story.
Last night was my first Creo mating. Tempest, the girl, was skinnier than I would have liked but I caught her calling so plaintively last night I decided to give it a go. Voodoo my sexy man mantis was more than ready. Upon seeing her he started some sharp fast wing drumming. There was even some flaring of the wing and wiggle butt dancing. All and all it only took him about five-ten minutes to make his move. He jumped on backwards (protective measure for males perhaps) but quickly turned and in under a minute they were connected and getting it on.
For about two hours all was well in the land of hot steamy mantis sex time. Around the two hour mark however I could tell Tempest was sort of over it. She was starting to reach back with her claws like she really wanted to snag him. I think some of the problem was she had after connecting decided to move to the underside of a somewhat slick leaf. I don't think she had the best grip and at that point wasn't feeling the most secure with the footing. If I had been thinking better I would have tried flipping the leaf and letting her reposition herself but instead I decided to pull out a cricket to see if that would take her mind off Voodoo.
She was indeed happy to snag the cricket but in her zeal Voodoo got somewhat unseated. He was still connected but he was sort of wrapped around her side in an awkward position. About a minute into the cricket Tempest had decided she had enough of him hanging off her like a leech and dropped the cricket and proceeded to try and rip him off by force. Thankfully my chopsticks saved the day and after about 30secs- minute of playing keep away Voodoo decided the fun time must be over and flew to safety across my room. From what I can tell they both made it through unscathed.
Still, I consider the ending to have been rather premature. I don't think Voodoo was ready so my question is would it be best to re-breed in the future? If so do females tend to call again even after breeding?
Naturally I plan to give them both plenty of recovery time, I also have another female that has dibs before Tempest gets another go, but I wanted to see what more experienced breeders would do in this scenario?
