I've seen mantises fight passionately for one single fly, which usually results in a struggle of a couple of seconds until the winner emerges from the fight. Most of my mantises are not communal, so this is usually a non-issue.

Interestingly, my idolos occasionally would get into a jealous mood and fight over one stupid fly. It's as if they're like, "If I see my sister eating a fly, I will ignore all the 50 flies buzzing around and I must have the fly she is holding in her hands." I can't help but worry that such fights will be detrimental to their health, so I try to hang around during feeding time to break up any fights.

Today, to my pleasant surprise, two of my orchids were sharing a fly. At first I thought they were in the middle of a fight, but to my surprise, they were eating peacefully, and both finished the fly at the same time.

Sharing is caring. :) Which, unfortunately, doesn't happen very often with mantids.

Very interesting problem you have there. Great to see that you captured it as well, nice shots! :D

The third one looking in, is really thinking about joining in too... Or maybe waiting for the fight to begin.. cool pic.. thanks for sharing

One time i saw my mantises doing that and then after they were done with the fly it ate the other mantis that it was sharing with.

Lol that poor third mantis. She is like, "What about me? I want some food, I mean I want to be caring too."

I love the pictures. We all could share a little more!

I thought Orchids were not communal. Can nymphs be raised communally if separated by gender?

Nope, I wouldn't say they're communal. Females definitely should be separated as soon as possible. Males...well, these are the males that I've kept together with no issues so far, but I keep them very well fed. Also, I should separate them out soon, to be on the safe side.
