mating mantids is something i can't stand. i always wait until the males connected until i leave the room. most of the time im there for 2 hours at a time. today i tryed mating my creobroter gemmatus. the male was slowly creeping towards her for about 15 mins, then he suddenly stopped and did nothing for 10 mins. my legs started to ache as i was in the bug shed for an hour waiting for something to happen so i decided to just turn the light off and walk out. its been about 30 mins and i don't dare check on them.. im scared to find a half eaten male.

i think i have something wrong with me! everytime i try mating mantids and the male gets close, i get that scared of something happening to him that i can feel my heart beat  i know its pathetic but i can't help it.

anyways, im sure my female was calling this morning. shes fatten up and will eat nomore. in the past 2 days shes ate 2 adult roaches and about 5 medium crickets.

the male last ate a cricket 2 days ago.

should i be worried or will they mate in their own time?

i might check on them and see whats going on. its been about an hour now. will turning a light on disturb them?
I really don't know if it will disturb them or not. I've gone to check and turned on the light in the bug room while mantids were mating, and it didn't seem to disturb them that I could tell. But I didn't wave my arms around shouting and flicking the light on and off either, hehe. :)

lol :p they're in the exact same place. his antlers are twitching so i think that means his interested.. right?

You're not alone. Even a person like me who has bred mantids for years is still afraid sometimes that the female will turn around and damage or eat the male when he tries to mount. This was especially true when I had 1 male and 8+ females earlier this year. But, the way I solve this problem is that I just hold the females forelegs to guarantee a successful connection. Then, it's all up the female afterwards.

I have had no problems in breeding mine and guess all my males and females of the species I bred knew how to behave and also I made sure they had a decent meal before mating them and can assure you that patience is the key to breeding any species and if the male becomes a snack then maybe the female had not had a meal beforehand or some other snafu. My theory is if the female has had nothing to munch on before the breeding and decides to snack on the male then thats prob a obvious reason she decides to have her meal to go! I been successful with creobroter gemmatus, creobroter nebulosa, acromantis, europeans and miomantis paykuii and looking forward to breeding my giant asians once they reach maturity and if I can find one male amongst all my females and hoping to raise some chinese to adult hood as well but have some ooths I am waiting on and one is incubating and waiting on that as well as a few other ooths I am watching!

my female is sick :(

theres brown stuff on top of her enclosure.

should i wait until shes better before i try mating again?

I don't see anything to be worried about in this hobby. What ever will you do when something that you really need to worry about comes up?
