Just an observation / question... Are B. Mendica just generally kinda... I don't know, deficient in mantis like skills? The can't hunt for $%#@, their feet can't hold on to anything without good grip. They are very easily startled... I base these comparisons on my other mantid types, S. bicornis, C. gemmatus, and P. affinis... Who are all very active and not so "retarded" :p

So I guess the conversation I am trying to get going here is:

1. In your experience, what is the most "mentally deficient mantid" you've owned?

2. Are most flower type mantids similar mendicas in behavior? Because my gemmatus is definitely not (jumps almost 8 inches at L2!!!).

3. What mantis have you had that was an insane jumper and hard to keep track of?

4. Who loves affinis?

Wow that got wildly off topic!

 Slightly! Understatement! But is toss up between them and the idols in my opinion! But wait.... something is nibbling at my mind....  huh, theres another one, to early, brain cannot function... takes another sip of very hot good coffee.... nope nothin!

Yeah, definitely Idolomantis...

But they aren't "retarded", they are just highly specialized. Most highly specialized mantids seem rather "incompetent" to us. Looking at my idolos, I often just stare at them and shake my head, asking myself how they survived as long... But it's just because our conditions don't perfectly (just almost) fit the conditions they are adapted to.

;) gottcha Christian! The other I guess is the P. pinnavonis or peacock, they dont eat, dont mate, dont move, if they wernt so pretty I would not bother with them, sometimes I get so aggravated trying to make sure they have food, even though it usually lays dead in the container after awhile.

I've only ever had one Peacock, a retired female, kindly given to me my Peter. She had a suitably large enclosure, but generally managed to sit motionless and apparently asleep with at least one leg on the lid and one on each feeding port.

She would doze while flies (big suckers!) and bees buzzed by; she dozed while giant crickets chirped encouragingly. "Eat me! Eat me!" She dozed while prettily colored moths perched delicately upon her raptorial arms. The only thing that got her going were cockroaches. How ever quietly they crept around or burrowed in the substrate or pretended to be dead, she would snap them up and then go back to sleep. I think that Peter had hypnotized her!

I didn't realize P. pinnavonis was so lazy!

Gurd: yes, I've often wondered that too... sometimes they seem like they are actually looking at me at thinking something... they really are aliens
