Sweet, are you getting an FL Keys or Haitian alternans? I prefer the Haitians, as they get bigger and are prettier IMO, though they're a bit harder to find and more expensive usually. Alternans in general, though, tend to stay burrowed 24/7, so they're not necessarily the best choice if you're looking a good display pede. Have you kept centipedes before?

Awesome, well make sure to buy an older juvenile or adult, bc really young alternans pedelings tend to die (often for no reason) pretty easily, whereas older ones are pretty hardy. And if you ever decide you wanna try keeping other pede species, feel free to get in touch, as I almost always have a few extra pedes that could use a good home.

Ha, yeah many of use keep many other insects/bugs/etc besides mantids too. :D With so many other things that overlap (equipment, accessories, feeders, etc) a new pet requires little/if any additional material.

Sounds like it will be a interesting specimen. Although I tend to keep only millipedes, centipedes are great as well (I just find them too territorial and must be housed alone). Did you acquire one yet? I ask as you said it is 7 months old - any photos? ;)

Don't mean to hijack your thread, but here's a pic of my baby S. alternans "Haitian Black Morph"

And my big S. alternans "FL Keys Morph" mama. Btw, if you ever have questions about keeping alternans (or any other pede species for that matter), don't hesitate to gimme a holler.

Ah alright ;) Sounds sweet, share some photos when it arrives.

Great, and it is nice already having everything needed too. Yet another reason to get other species. :D

sadly my camera takes files that are too massive for the forum to upload ?
Yeah about everyone's camera does now, mine included (any camera that is 7 or 8 megapixels or above I think it is, which is a good thing). :D

You will have to crop/scale the image to a respectable size (900 pixels wide (horizontal) is my default size, and the height (vertical) is set automatically by the linked scale) in a image editing program like Photoshop, GIMP, or whatever first. At that point most people throw in a watermark too on the photo. Save a copy of the scaled image and then upload that.

My photos are like 750 kb....
Strange as those seem to be tiny photos already, perhaps they are literally at the limit. The ones I was referring to are 6-10 mb in file size, and about 200 kb once cropped for online. I sent a PM to see if we can get it figured out. ;)

They cannot be shrunk to a reasonable size while maintaining the subject xD
I received the photo and it is 2048x1536 which is within the limits. The only cause I can think of is that your remaining image uploads amount here on Mantidforum is used up. When you do a quick message reply, on the bottom left it says, "Drag files here to attach, or choose files...  Max total size ??.?MB" - how much does your Max total size show remaining?

Since the new update everyone got more room for photos, but it doesn't take long to fill it up. If it is less than 1MB you will have to delete some of your older photos to make room, or use a image host (Photobucket or such).

Besides a image host, another trick is to start a free Blog on Google, only takes a few minutes, and you can upload to your hearts content - then just post the link to the image(s) or a link to the blog post with the images. One last trick for limitless photo sharing is to create a Google Drive and upload your photos, and right-click them and click Get sharable Link. ;) Although you can get the photos to show up direct it takes some trickery and isn't as straight forward as a image host, but clicking a link is better than nothing. :)

Nice to see a member owned specimen of what is being discussed, thanks for sharing. :) I hate to do a image search as often times no matter the species name used in Google Images, random unrelated photos show up and unless you know what you are looking, it is too easy to be confused. ;)
