Do these spiders live in New York? If so, then I found a HUGE specimen, and I want to keep it. Would I ve able to keep it in a 32 oz deli while being fed crix?

EDIT: Also known as Shamrock Orb Weaver.

...um short answer, no. Orbweavers are know for making huge webs to catch their prey in, a 32oz deli will not suffice for the room...and I don't know about crix in that container either...the i only way I have fed an orbweaver (most web making spiders) is to take a moth, use forceps to grip it by the wing and it should start to flutter, now slowly bring it up to the spiders front two (longer legs) or from the side...the other free wing (that should be flutting) should now come in contact with the spider, and leave it their for a second; this should elicit a response from the spider to either lunge and grab the moth with its "fangs" and then use its other legs to hold it down, or it will run away from the moth...and use a moth no bigger than the spider at first, after it gets used to feeding lile this, then it will take larger moths...TRICK: if u want to feed your spider a bigger meal than it had caught, wait until it begins wrapping the prey then with forceps introdude the new prey item into this silken ball and it will end up wrapping up the addition u put in there....

All the best,

Andrew

I don't like using tongs to feed orb weavers. Most of the time, the spider will wrap the tongs. When I try to get my tongs back, it pulls away a good part of the web that they worked hard to build. :(

I use my fingers to hold the wings of flying insects. :shifty: It sometimes takes longer for the spider to trust fingers, but at least they don't wrap them. The webs stay looking nice that way.

I have never had a spider miss the flapping creature in my fingers. :D

If you have a screened patio, you can keep the spider there.

I don't use the tongs to put the prey item in the web, just usr them to "hand" the prey to the spider...then as I release the tongs slowly the spider is alright with letting the tongs go...once it has the prey it its grasp, it seldom lets go for anything...and I use tongs mainly bc it gives me a longer reach and morr precise 'aim' ....but if it is relatively close, fingers all the way ;)

No fair, If they don't wrap your tongs, but they wrap mine! Lol!

The Argiope argentata always wrap my tongs even if I hand the prey directly to them(which I usually did). On the other hand, it is fun to watch how fast they can run on the web sometimes. :tt2:

If I use tongs with the Nephila clavipes, they usually don't wrap them, but that web is a pain to remove from anything if they do. I have almost given up and threw some tongs and containers away, on account of N. clavipes web. :surrender:

Nephila clavipes I would believe is the spider with the strongest web ( or at least the genus Nephila) .....if you get anything caught in that web, like tongs...it is most definitely nearly impossible to clean it...they are such a power-house spider, they take their sweet ol time when it comes to wrapping...they mainly just go in for the bite and then wrap it up later just to hold onto it...

Don't I know it?!

Sorry about the hijack, sinensispsyched. I get all excited about orbweavers. lol

Yeah Sinensis, sorry :p .....if u really want a nice pet spider that can live freely in your room and make a nice web, Nephila is for you...such an amazing species, and sort of tame...
