I shall pay a Huge Sum ($10++!) for M and F adult California mantis, Stagmomantis californica. NOT S. carolina with "made in California" stamped on them!

Found in: CA, CO, AZ, NM, TX.

Male wings are proportionally longer that S. carolina (i.e. they project well beyond the end of the abdomen). Female's body is slimmer, too. Length 4-5cm, like S. limbata. Anything longer will probably be S. carolina Widening at tail end of pronotum less than S. carolina, more than S. limbata.

Male hind wings brownish with a purple spot at the base. Much of this info is taken from Helfer's How to know the Grasshoppers....

Go for it folks. Make yourselves rich!

That's a good strategy to get them. I've heard some people say that the species is common in their area but let's see if they are able to get them. If anyone does reply, I'm guessing you're most likely to get females considering the time of the season (well at least where I'm at). There may still be time left before the cold really sets in.

Start saving your pennies Phil! For that kind of money I'll find some in my yard! Alas, as mentioned, I don't think I will be able to find any until next summer. We had our first hard freeze of the year Friday/Sat. Doubt any adults are still hanging around. But I will give it a try tonight with ye ol' black light.

could always look for ooths if you cant find any live mantids

Yeah i got 2 female Stagmomantis Limbatas adults and one is laying a ooth as we speak so ill have ooths for sale once she has a couple and my other female should be having ooths to found them both outside =]

I believe Phil is looking for Stagmomantis californica not Stagmomantis Limbata

I have been looking for a gravid female s. californica like crazy lately. It is getting pretty cold all of a sudden around here so I hope to find one before they all drop dead. Lately I have checked every sage bush I come across to no avail -- if, as some say, this is not a rare mantis, I am wondering where the heck they all are!

If the frost hasn't hit your area yet, it may still be possible. Other than that, you can try looking for their ooths. I don't know what their ooths look like but hopefully it doesn't resemble the other species that may also be present (limbata?).

Isnt a Stagmomantis Califorina Mantid a Limbata or are there 2 different species?

No. stagmomantis californiCa is "california mantis" whereas s. limbata is "arizona bordered mantis" - even though s. limbata seems to live in southern california it is not even from here.
Oh wow thats good to know thanks for answering my question i was so curios about that..!!!
