I decided to make a log for these guys. Streptocephalus sealii are commonly known as spiny tail fairy shrimp. Fairy shrimp are crustaceans that inhabit temporary bodies of water called vernal pool. Now if any body kept sea monkeys (aka brine shrimp), that's what they look like but instead of living in salty lakes, they live kitty pool sized ponds that last a few months,    fascinating  <_<  Interesting thing is that they lay eggs that can be dried and the embryos go into a dormant state. They also get bigger than brine shrimp and of course they live in fresh water. Now I ordered their eggs from the black market, jk I just got them the next best place, eBay. I also got some Triops newberri from the same seller. If those who don't know what triops are the think of but sea monkeys on steroids. I will also make a log these in the near future.

Now, I put the eggs in a jar filled with distilled water yesterday morning and  fast forward to today in the morning, I have found  the baby fairy shrimp swimming in the jar. With in 24 hours they have hatched, now I must wait for them to mature, which should be is in a week or two.

Heres the set up image.jpg

Babies are way too small to take a picture of so once they get big enough I will take a picture of them.

Sweet, they get gigantic compared to sea monkeys in photos online like 50 times bigger. I had sea monkeys (brine shrimp) many times as a kid and have to admit the first time I got them about age 10 it was nothing like the box claimed lol. I did keep them well fed and living in that silly sea monkey house until I ran out of their food. At that point my dad suggested I grind up dry cat food for feed, not sure if it didn't work or just dirtied the water too much.

Best of luck with your new pets. I found them on ebay as well $7.99 for 10 eggs and free shipping. I may have to see if I can add another new pet myself. ;)

CosbyArt, fairy shrimp and brine shrimp are filter feeders if your going to feed them any thing your going to feed them activated yeast or algae (green water)

also they live in low oxygen water so that fancy filters and bubblers will not be needed.

Yeah that would explain their demise then. I've come across the algae water before online, and said to be easy to culture new batches as well. Thanks for the tips. :)

Very cool, kept the "sea monkeys" before, though these seem much more interesting. My culture died out about a year after strating it, despite having plenty of the food left. :( Also got some Triop eggs somewhere in my garage, never got around to hatching those out...

Hisserdude, Those eggs are still viable, where did you get them from. I recommend hatching them, but you should only use half of them and if you are successful in breeding them, then you could use the rest, but if you are not then find out what you've done wrong and learn from it, that is the beauty of these kind of organism you get two chances which leaves some room for error. Also triops are parthenogenetic which makes breeding a sinch except if you are the unlucky few that ends up with just one male, in witch I can't help you there.

I got them from a Hobby Lobby, one of those "Prehistoric beasts" kind of kits. I know they are still viable, but I don't quite know where I put them... Even if I did find them though, I have no room for a aquatic setup at the moment, so unfortunately I probably won't be hatching them anytime soon. One day though, once I have more room available I will definitely hatch some out! :)  Thanks for all the tips!
