MAting takes hours, sometimes days. I wouldn't bother watching them. Leave them in an open room, so he can get away when need be. Also, whenever you see her, giver her somme food to keep her hunger at bay.

i already gave her a huge grsshoper and a jumbo wild black cricket today. she's so fat she could burst! I cant let them out or they will escape in my house i have alot of clutter.

Oh, ok, well Then I would recommend keeping them in a very large conatiner, and checking on an hourly basis, and still feed her every 4-5 hours if possible, even if you only feed her small food.

They will usually stay in one spot or close to it when mating. After they are done might be different. I let mine mate on my curtains. When they were done (like a day later) I found the female in almost the same spot and the male was below her about a foot away just chilin.

Oh yeah, congratulations.

Often the male will disconnect and sit on her back for awhile. Maybe you will get lucky and come in during that time and be able to remove him.

wow i got lucky he was still alive in the tank with her. Now he gets a few days of rest then he gets to mate with the other female i have and the one's in my backyard. I wonder how many times he can get lucky before he loses his head? anyways thank you everyone for all the advice and congradulating me :) . I plan on placing most of the otheca's outside and hatching one for myself. So I hear a good place to store the otheca is in a crisper drawer in the refrigerator. do i put them in a paper bag and leave them alone once i keep them in the crisper? also how would i go about trasplanting them outside?

If you plan on putting the ooths outside to hatch just go ahead and put them outside now. They will hatch at the appropriate time in the spring. Nature will be a much better environment for the ooth than your fridge. The one you want to hatch yourself you can just leave out in a hatching container and it will hatch in 6-8 weeks. Or if you need to delay, you can put in fridge.

Well she hasnt layed any just yet. With chinese mantids dont you have to make the otheca go through a cold period before they hatch? I was reading the tips page you made and it said at least 3 weeks right?

i've hatched their ooths without diapausing them before
Me too. I had some wild caught Chinese that laid before I knew that they needed to be chilled. All the ooths hatched fine and I ended up with 100's of nymphs. It still took almost 3 months.

3 months? dam i hope mine dont take that long. So does anyone know if im better off diapausing the oths?
