Is there a procedure or a stratedgy to keep european or chinese ooths from hatching if someone wishes to hatch them in the 2010 spring/summer season as I know I can store them in my garage but they get no light in the garage and would be dark and would be afraid they would prematurely hatch out and was thinking of setting a area outside where maybe I could store all the ooths I dont want to hatch till next year if I can bug proof it first and arrange it so nothing can get at them but only downside is they will be susceptable to rain is all!

You could always put them in the fridge. Just make sure you mist them regularly so they don't dry out.

Oh and make sure you don't have any rodents living in your garage. When i lived with my parents i decieded to overwinter some chinese ooths in the garage. I went to go check on them one day and found them almost completly eaten. Dam field mice got to them.

well I got a large flat tupperware container I set up with paper towel in it for now and when I the ooths start being laid then will store them one at a time and only problem is right now the outside temp is a little warm so I think the garage would be a little warm to but maybe not if there is no light source and there is none unless a garage door is opened!

The best thing I can think of is putting the oothecaes in somewhere cool regardless of whether there's light or not. I don't think you may have to worry about susceptability to rain because European and Chinese mantids are established here in the U.S. In the wild, oothecaes are hit with rain, snow, and other natural factors. If they were susceptible to something as simple as rain, they wouldn't have become naturalized. That doesn't mean you can soak them under water. All I'm trying to say is that they can withstand rain. But, you don't have to go by what I say because I try to do everything the natural way.

Rain won't hurt but being in an enclosed space and wet is not good. If you put them in a garage or something where it doesn't get really cold they will still hatch.
