I have noticed that humans as a species seem to be more afraid of animals on a scale from one to seven depending on the number of legs they have.

- 1 DOGS AND CATS We are generally not scared of either of these animals because of having four legs which is only 2 more then we have ( if you don't consider arms legs) and their commonness makes them not frightening however a big mean dog can be very threatening.

- 2 BUTTERFLIES AND MOTHS We usually are not scared of butterflies because we rarely see a butterfly`s or moth`s legs, so we consider their wings their legs which makes 2 legs the reason we are more scared of them rather that dogs and cats is because they are insects.

- 3 THE MANTIS Humans generally don't consider mantids with 6 legs most people would consider mantids to have 4 legs because of the raptorial legs.

- 4 OTHER INSECTS All insects have 6 legs which is 4 legs more then a human

- 5 RATS Most rats have a very thick leg like tail which is considered five legs to the human sub-conscious mind.

- 6 SPIDERS AND SCORPIONS They have 8 legs and they are famously venomous.

- 7 SNAKES AND CENTIPEDES SNAKES: This leg theory can also work in reverse as an animal that has 0 legs and is venomous can be more frightening than an animal with 20 legs CENTIPEDES: when most people think of a " creepy crawly" a spider or cockoroach comes to mind, but when people are aware of the biting power of a centipede, they can be down-right terrifying, also they have an insane amount of legs.

Well anyway, that is my theory on common phobias of certain animals.

Edit: When making this list I forgot to include 2 important factors: teeth and size. Also this list was made for the general person living in the United States of America.

There are lots of gray areas and I think it depends on the person. To me, a syringe is more frightening than numbers 2 to 7. In regards to animals with 4 legs like dogs and cats, I wouldn't want to meet a grizzly bear.
