has anyone else besides me notice some males can survive 4-5 or more matings and then there is the ones that only seem to survive 1-2 matings and die off and no not because of the females eating them.Is this more to happen in smaller species where the males seem to take less matings before they die then the larger species as I had a miomantis biotata male and he mated twice with a few failures in between but after the second mating his eyes kind of turned a reddish and then the male became somewhat catatonic and later on in the day he fell on the bottom of enclosure and had to put him out of his misery and just wondered if smaller species can only handle fewer matings then larger ones!

Males just don't live as long as a rule, plus they burn up energy being excited by the female which takes it's toll on them. I don't have proof but i feel every mating takes about a week off their life, giving them plenty of water after seems to help. If you knew there was a chance of being injured or eaten when you mated it may wear on you as well, Ha-ha.

I personally feel some males have more to give than others. I have witnessed males of the same species mate once, and die. And then there are others that mate like five, or six times without showing any fatigue. It can be said for females as well. I have had females lay one ooth and die soon after, and then others lay like six or more. Depends on the mantis. Well, and of course how we keep them I'm sure plays a huge factor.

same with me seen females die after one ooth as well and some who die without laying any infertile ooths too!
