I apologize if this has already been posted as i am still relatively new to Mantidforum but I found the University of Maryland's website on insect auditory evolution and there are several research articles on the development of the auditory system of mantids as well as publications on evasive mantid behaviors in response to predators like bats. The article i found the most interesting is on the comparative aspects of rearing and breeding mantids. Here is a link to a page that has all of the publications with PDF files for those who are interested: http://www.mantislab.com/Publications/Entries/2011/6/28_Praying_Mantises.html

UMD, my alma mater! :D

I wonder if I can go back and chat with the folks working on the project! Sad to say, when I was there, I didn't study anything remotely related to biology - biology and entomology has always been a side hobby for me.

On a related note, here's a link to further reading. The material may be a bit outdated, but it's still pretty interesting - there was one article about the auditory capabilities of males vs. females and nymphs vs. adults.
