Found this inside today. Not sure what it is. To me it almost looks like an assassin bug, but I have little to no experience with them and am probably embarassingly far off. Basically I want to know what it is, if it does anything cool, and if it doesn't is it good mantis food.

Haha! Oh, I see these guys all the time. Look under it's thorax and abdomen - is there a tube coming from it's head? I think that it is an insect similar to a stinkbug or a box elder bug, and that it sucks plant juices.

Fed to double shield. My room smells like apples now. Not too strong. Pretty nice actually. Should find them to feed my bugs when it gets smelly in the summer months.

Leptoglossus clypealis leaf bug. If a mantis eats it it smells TERRIBLE. They let off stink like stinkbugs

No it is an assassin bug, I posted pictures of that same bug in this thread and it had the same smell.

When doing more research I found that mime was right with his leaf footed bug id. It had sections on its back legs which flattened out to look like a leaf, which is one of the key features of them.

HOWEVER, everyone is saying that they smell terrible and powerful when eaten by a mantis. This wasn't the case with this one. I fed it to a female double shield mantis, and the smell was pretty weak, didn't fill the room at all, and wasn't unlike the smell of an apple. I found it not unpleasant actually. I suppose because it was a different species than my friends in the states have had experience with. The double shield lady ate it up quite happily, and is perfectly healthy this morning. Might even be able to use them as air fresheners later this summer :p

Okay, yes, I believe that it has sucking mouthparts for plant juices. Here's another test: take a piece of a cotton ball, or a small wad of paper towel. Get it wet. Put it in the same cage as the above mentioned insect. Watch how it drinks.
