I bred one of my female multispinas yesterday. The male stayed attached all day. He flew off of her and there was no struggle between them. Now this morning I noticed the female on her cage floor.

Sticking out of her sexual area is a hard white thing. I guess its the sack the male injects containg his sperm. Its very large and is stuck firmly in place.

I tried to pull it out but it is dried in place. I have sprizted it with water but there is alot stuck to her skin. Does anyone have a suggestion?

I think she may eat it off, hard to say, never seen that before, but someone on here has surely, any idea why she on floor and other wise how is she acting?

I think she was in pain but not sure. I pulled it off after letting it soften with water. There was a ball attached that looks like a pearl! Its even irridescent and very hard. I bet it contained the sperm. It was large, twice the size of one of her eyes almost. She was very uncomfortable.

She seems fine now. Shes hanging out on a plant relaxing. If the ball contained the sperm I can remate them again.

What you are seeing is the spermatophore. The sperm is delivered from it and the female stores the sperm in her spermatheca. It is normal for it to be visible after a mating so there is no reason to try and remove it. If your mantis is acting strangely it is due to another reason.

OH dear me, will I get to graze there or am I going to glue factory?

ps dont feel dumb, I would of done same thing.....

She is fine this morning. I feel dumb! Next time I will leave it alone. Thanks everyone.
It isn't always visible but often is. Some mantids will eat it. I see that quite often in Stagmomantis sp.
