Hey guys. I was wondering what to expect when some of my females get older, so I searched youtube, and found absolutley nothing about calling behaviour or what it looks like when females release pheromones to attract a male. I've read that they'll wiggle their abdomen up and down, or curl it... I'm really not sure. So I wanted to ask you guys if you've ever seen or taken a video of a mantis that is clearly calling. I've read that they do it in the dead of night, and the moment the lights are turned on, they stop, so I guess that's part of the reason. I'm still supprised that there's no videos I could find, though I'll keep looking.

They do it whenever/wherever, though they might be more prone to it during the morning (I wouldn't know since I'm never awake in those hours >.>). But yeah, there's no sound and they don't move at all. You'll definitely recognize it when you see it for the first time though, there's no mistaking it.

Mine usually only stop when I grab the container. Also just keep in mind that the female doesn't need to be calling in order to be mated. I find that males are more visually "attracted" to females when they notice her and I've had a lot of success just placing the male behind the female, and wiggling the female until the male realizes she's there. Most of the time if they are interested they will hop on immediately.
